Turevsky 2:5022/8@fidonet July 29, 1993 Status of this document: This FSC suggests a proposed way to eliminate using of bearded jokes in the FidoNet(r) community, and requests discussion and suggests for improvements. Distribution of this document is unlimited. Fido and FidoNet are registered marks of Tom Jennings and Fido Software. Purpose To explain and document the usage of the ^aBEARD-SIZE kludge used to eliminate bearded jokes and to inform software authors of its proper usage. Prologue One problem with the FidoNet(r) EchoMail is that many authors of messages liked to use old jokes. These jokes are familiar to all readers, and there is not need to transmit them via EchoMail. Eliminating these old jokes allow save money by reducing size of transmitted data. To handle with jokes we propose to use new kludge ^aBEARD-SIZE placed somewhere near the beginning of a joke. ^aBEARD-SIZE kludge The BEARD-SIZE string should be placed somewhere near the beginning of the joke text, and is preceded by a <SOH> (^a) character. Following that string is header (string ":-)"); one or more characters "=", shows actual size of beard of joke and one character "-" at the end of kludge. Echoprocessors (or special mail robots) must support that kludge on each node and, especially, on each hub. When new joke is created, kludge ^aBEARD-SIZE is attached to it with size of beard 1 ( "\\x01BEARD-SIZE :-)=-" ). Each time this joke is transmitted to next reader, size of beard is increased by one. E.g. second readers (all of them) will send joke with size two etc. Suggesting that joke is transmitted by one person to only ten other persons we will have joke of beard size seven is known to all of Earth population. Echoprocessors (or special mail robots) are able to delete jokes with too long beards (for example just above 4). Note In EchoMail technology kludge ^aBEARD-SIZE is not equivalent to number of entries in kludge ^a" ". Passing through nodes in EchoMail does not increase size of beard.
