Best wishes, Harry Monday August 01 1994 10:18 * From Area: TEAMOS2 (TEAMOS2) * Friday July 29 1994 from Richard Jacox 1:275/37 to Lori Martin: -=> Quoting Lori Martin to Kenny Shin <=- KS>--Tom Mace, Associate Editor, PC Magazine KS>If this is true, he does have a point. Is there a reason why IBM can't KS>give as much information about its products away as Microsoft? Probably the consent decree from way back when. LM> Is this guy aware that reporters are the ones who are supposed to go LM> OUT and get the info, not wait for it to be supplied to them? Of course, he is. But, he is human. I once had a boss who told me that the cheapest way to win a client is to buy him lunch. Sounds cynical, BUT IT WORKS. Then, the way to keep him is to do his job for him. Sounds even more cynical, BUT IT WORKS! So, if I were trying to sell a product, I would put on MANY big press parties. Is it only 'cause I like to hang around computer rag pundits? And, I wqould put out Reviewer "Guides" because I really want to help the reviewers? I don't know for sure, but if I were doing a Reviewer Guide for a product that I was trying to sell, you can bet that ONLY the good stuff would be in it. And that would probably be embellished! All my wonderful "plans" would be EMPHASIZED!!! All my mistakes and everywhere that I decided "that's close enough" would be ELIMINATED. Now, if I did that, I might get carried away. I might go just a little beyond embellishment. I might just forget about that "minor" problem where all my tax records get corrupted. Especially, if I couldn't quite figure out what the problem is or how to fix it! Supposing just a little more that I'm the reviewer. I have this wonderful Reviewer's Guide. I'm a little bit sleepy from that GREAT lunch that I just had. I'm a little bit strapped for time because, like most people today, I have more things to do than time to do them. But, I have got to get this piece written. So, sure I know that the guide is embellished. Sure, I know I should actually run at least something beyond the demo. But heck, these are great guys. They just bought me LUNCH! Oh, for cryin' out loud, I'll just bring up the demo. Hmmm. O.K., the demo didn't crash. Whoo! Look at the time! Oh, well, let me see. I bet I could just do a little piece here right from the reviewer's guide. WOW! This system is really neat. I better get the word out to all my readers! Now. I've put out the word. MY WORD. What? You say that the thing is crashing on demand? Well, better tell the good guys who did the reviewer's guide. No, no. no. Don't do a piece on that! People don't like bad news! Besides, where will my credibility be if I reverse myself now? What? Another guy says that it's crashing on demand? Well, O.K. I'll do a line on it for a filler on the fifth page from the back. Of course, I don't want to irritate those great guys who feed me those GREAT LUNCHES. Well, I'll do a PARAGRAPH on how committed they are to fixing this problem in the next release. That way we'll all come out looking like good guys! . . . Well? What would you do? Regards Rich ...
